Another Orlando shooting: Raising kids in a mass-murder world

Twice, my son has attended the summer teen academy at the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

Both times, the first day’s activities were interrupted by a mass murder.

Last year, he started the Monday after Pulse. Deputies who were supposed to help kids understand the challenges and rewards of working in law enforcement were still reeling themselves from the bloody crime scene with 49 fatalities that they had encountered the day before.

Then this Monday, Sheriff Jerry Demings couldn’t attend the opening session with the teenagers as he was dealing with six dead people at the Fiamma complex in east Orange County.

A 35-year-old Milledgeville man accused in the execution-style shooting death of a woman at a local store Tuesday afternoon had previously been arrested six times since 2002, The Union-Recorder has learned.

Two of the victim’s grandchildren, an 8-year-old third-grader at an elementary school in Baldwin County, and his 6-year-old sister, a first-grader at the same school, witnessed the tragedy, Baldwin County Sheriff Bill Massee said.

While family and friends continue mourning the loss of Rita “Faye” Heron, they will gather this afternoon (Saturday) to pay their final respects at her funeral. It is set for 4 p.m. in the chapel of Williams Funeral Home in Milledgeville. The Rev. Tim Thomas will officiate.

Family will greet friends and others at the funeral home from 3 p.m. until time for the service, and then immediately after the service.

Mother and sons killed in ‘horrific’ quadruple Gentilly shooting; daughter, 12, in serious condition

Residents on a quiet Gentilly street awoke Friday to a gruesome scene — a quadruple shooting that left a young mother and her two sons dead, with her 12-year-old daughter in serious condition at the hospital.

The shooting occurred before dawn, when New Orleans police officers were dispatched to a tan brick home in the 4200 block of Touro Street.

Though some neighbors said they didn’t hear any gunshots, officers who arrived at the home shortly after 4 a.m. found Monique Smith, 30, and her sons Jumyrin Smith, 6, and Justin Simms, 10, shot to death inside the house.

Also wounded by gunfire was Monique Smith’s 12-year-old daughter, A’Miya Smith, who was rushed to a hospital.

Smith and her two sons were all shot in the head, according to sources cited by WWL-TV. Police would not confirm how severely A’Miya was injured but said the girl was in serious condition.

Within hours, family members arrived

After Mourning the Charleston Shooting Victims, White People Still Voted Trump

Marjorie
McIver said she didn’t want to talk politics. She was mindful about how she
would be perceived, how her words might be used, or misused, no matter how
carefully she explained herself. I want to talk about her, though, because her story upends a central narrative surrounding Donald Trump’s victory, that personal pain makes people susceptible to those, like our president-elect, willing their exploit anguish.

She deftly veered our
discussion away from the 2016 election after I asked her about the possibility
that Hillary Clinton could become this country’s female president. This was in
early February, two weeks before Trump won the Republican primary in our
home state of South Carolina. He’d receive nearly 50 percent of the vote in Horry County, where
