Criminal defence lawyers need to be included in mental health conversation

Anyone who spends time in Canada’s criminal courts can tell you it is nothing like you see on television. Rarely are there Matlock moments where a case is solved with one well-timed question. There is drama and excitement in court but this is usually broken up by long periods of dull procedural and legal argument. But television gets one thing right – the evidence presented in court can often be gruesome and disturbing.  

The impact of graphic courtroom evidence was made plain last week at the House of Commons standing committee on justice and human rights. The committee is studying the toll that this type of evidence can take on the mental health of jurors.

Man’s death draws big police presence, but officials say it’s not criminal

PENNSAUKEN TWP. — The death of a man in a home on Mansion Boulevard does not appear to be criminal, authorities have said.

“At this time, the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office does not anticipate any criminal charges to be filed regarding the incident,” said Alexandra McVeigh, a spokeswoman for the office.

Police previously told 6abc that an officer found the man around 9:20 p.m. Monday when someone flagged him down while he was patrolling.

Outside the house at 6004 Mansion Blvd. Tuesday morning, individuals who identified themselves as family declined to speak with a reporter. They examined the broken glass in the house’s front door along with a crime scene clean-up team that was at the home.
