Head of American arts academy stepping down after 27 years

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The American Academy of Arts and Letters will soon have new leadership.

Executive director Virginia Dajani is stepping down after 27 years, the academy told The Associated Press on Thursday. She will be succeeded by Cody Upton, currently the director of operations. During her time as executive director, Dajani presided over numerous capital projects and helped expand the academy’s lucrative awards programs.

Dozens of honours are given annually, the prize money exceeding $1 million. Dajani also helped guide the organization’s transition from the National Institute of Arts and Letters, of which the academy was a separate entity, to the National Academy of Arts and Letters.

The academy is an honour society founded in 1898. Members over the years have included Mark Twain, Duke Ellington and Joan Didion.

New photos show bloody crime scene after cop shoots cafe worker dead next to daughter, 4

After Officer Yanez, 29, was found not guilty of manslaughter, Ms Reynolds released a statement, saying: “I am incredibly disappointed with the jury’s verdict.

“My boyfriend, Philando Castile, was pulled over because, per Officer Yanez, he had a wide nose and looked like a suspect.

“He did nothing but comply with Officer Yanez’s instructions to get his driver’s license. He was seatbelted and doing as he was told, when he was shot by Officer Yanez who fired 7 shots into the vehicle where my four-year-old daughter and I also sat.

“It is a sad state of affairs when this type of criminal conduct is condoned simply because Yanez is a policeman. God help America.”

The victim’s furious mother, Valerie Castile, said outside court: “I’m mad as hell right now. My son loved this city and this city killed my son.

“The system continues to fail black people.”

Second arrest made years after Coral Spring man killed

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – It’s been six years since the killing of Michael Hamilton, a man who was found dead in his Coral Springs apartment in what was described by police as a bloody crime scene.

“He was not an angry man. He was a kind, gentle soul,” the victim’s mother, Cathy Hamilton, said.

Cathy Hamilton and her husband now have a sense of closure amid the news that police have now nabbed two men in connection with her son’s murder.

“Losing a loved one to murder is never easy, and all those involved want to bring justice for the family of the victim. I am so grateful that we have two arrests in Michael’s case,” Cathy Hamilton said. “They are no longer among us, and they are now behind bars.”

Thanks to DNA evidence, Kadian Roper was arrested a few days ago and charged with first-degree murder.

Police arrested Jason Martinez last fall. He

After the shootings, calls for unity amid recriminations and finger-pointing

The president spoke as other presidents have done in times of tragedy or terrorism, saying, “We are strongest when we are unified and when we work for the common good.” House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., called on his colleagues to set an example. “Show the world we are one House, the people’s House, united in our humanity,” he said. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., implored her colleagues to make Thursday’s congressional baseball game an occasion “that will bring us together and not separate us further.”

After the shootings, calls for unity amid recriminations and finger-pointing

In the charged environment of 2017 it took only a few hours for a baseball diamond to be transformed from a peaceful practice field to a horrific crime scene and then to a vivid symbol of the tensions between the angry politics of our time and the better angels of the American people.

From President Trump to congressional leaders of both parties to ordinary citizens came calls for prayers for the victims of the shootings that left House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) and four others wounded, praise for the Capitol Police officers who prevented an even worse tragedy and above all words of reconciliation and unity.

But barely on the edges of those remarks was the outbreak of another round of recriminations and a renewed debate about what has brought the country to such a point of division, what is to blame for what happened on that baseball field shortly after
