Prosecutors won’t seek death penalty in drug-deal killing of Huntsville teen

Prosecutors don’t plan to seek the death penalty if Huntsville capital murder suspect Terrance Rodgers is convicted of killing a 20-year-old during a drug deal.

Rodgers is a Huntsville 18-year-old who admitted during recorded Madison County Jail phone calls that he killed Antonio Melson, according to police. Rodgers was arrested following the July 11 drug-deal killing of 20-year-old Melson.

Madison County Assistant District Attorney Bill Starnes said he met with Melson’s family members before deciding not to seek the death penalty.

“Among many other items, we discussed the penalties which might apply in a case of this nature and the thoughts of those present concerning that question,” Starnes wrote in court records. “In light of conversations…the state will not be seeking the death penalty.”
