Viewpoint: Cop’s ‘speak English’ demand wrong

There is a sign outside the classroom door where I have taught English as a second language to adult students for three decades.

It reads: “If you make fun of someone’s broken English and you don’t speak at least two languages fluently, you are a jerk of monumental proportions.”

I bring this up because I am appalled at the insensitivity displayed by a member of the Albany police force who said, “If you’re going to live in this country, you need to learn to speak English.”
