KALAMAZOO, MI  — Todd Maneke was desperate for crack cocaine and out of options when he went to Alfred Minka’s house in August 2013 in search of money and a car, Kalamazoo County Assistant Prosecutor Steven McLaughlin said.

There, McLaughlin said, Maneke hit Minka on the left side of the head with a hammer, took money out of his wallet and found his car keys. Then, realizing what he had done, he went back and beat Minka several times on the left side of the head, breaking the bones of his skull. Maneke then took Minka’s car to buy crack cocaine before parking the car in Minka’s garage and going back across the street to his home, McLaughlin said.

McLaughlin said Maneke didn’t mean to kill Minka when he first struck him, but then realized what he had done.
