Guest column: Raising kids in a mass-murder world

Twice, my son has attended the summer teen academy at the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

Both times, the first day’s activities were interrupted by a mass murder.

Last year, he started the Monday after Pulse. Deputies who were supposed to help kids understand the challenges and rewards of working in law enforcement were still reeling themselves from the bloody crime scene with 49 fatalities that they had encountered the day before.

This year, Sheriff Jerry Demings couldn’t attend the opening session with the teenagers as he was dealing with six dead people at the Fiamma complex in east Orange County.
